It is so easy to get caught up in the chaos of everyday life and let your circumstances control your daily outcome. If you are into personal goal setting but never seem to quite get to your ultimate goals, it is easy to get discouraged. But the best way to get back on track and regain your self control is time management.
You will greatly reduce your stress level if you manage your time. I do not mean micro manage. I really can’t get my arms around those minute to minute scheduling techniques. I have run a successful financial firm for over two decades and I have never micromanaged any of my employees so I sure don’t buy into micromanaging myself. But I do believe that management is in order when it comes to striving for your goals.
This is how I do it:
First, I prioritize and that never changes. I always put God and Family first. So this means that I pray and meditate everyday and I make sure that all of the NEEDS of my family are met. This is something that I manage by leveraging my time.
I am the executive director of my extremely busy family so part of my management is to delegate. You might think of this as a chore list. I ask for help and I put a deadline on it. I am very careful to be considerate of what I am asking and I take into account the other person’s schedules and desires when I am building the to-do list and the timeline. I also outsource, I have a great housekeeper and I hire out other help for big projects as well.
The second thing I do I learned from Ed Young. Ed is a pastor from Texas and he has a television broadcast of his services call Ed Young TV. He says “Say no to the good and yes to the best”. When I heard that, it was an “ah-ha” moment for me. I use this technique with everything from speaking engagements to charitable involvement. I use it when we are asked to spend time with friends and I use it every morning when I am sitting at my desk looking at 300 emails. Most everything is a good use of my time, but I can only say yes to the best.
What great advice have you gotten and followed about time management?
