Wealth Builders Anonymous: A 12 Step Program for You?

in Wealth Coach

by Renee Wittrock

12 steps to build wealthEvery day I talk to people who want to build wealth. It got me thinking, some people are so messed up over money that they really need a 12 step program to help them.

As successful as the 12 Step program is from Alcoholics Anonymous, I thought this would be a great base to make a 12 step program for Wealth Builders Anonymous (a fake organization made up for the impact and benefit of this blog).

So, I tweaked the AA 12 Steps and here are the 12 Steps for Wealth Builders Anonymous :

  1. We admitted we were powerless over money—that our spending had become unmanageable.
  2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
  3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him. Knowing that there are more references to money than prayer in most Bibles.
  4. Made a searching and fearless inventory of spending habits.
  5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our debt.
  6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
  7. Humbly asked Him to remove our hedonism and help us to give generously to others with the first 10% of our earnings.
  8. Made a list of all purchases we made out of impatience and desire over need.
  9. Made direct amends to our families for our beliefs about and fear of money and our self sabotaging spending habits
  10. Continued with a spending vs. need inventory; when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
  11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we will teach our children a better philosophy and psychology of money and practice these principles in all our affairs

Seriously, so many people’s credit card debt is more than half their annual income! Their only savings program is a 401K at work and they are literally scared of money.

If more people would follow the biblical principles of money they would become builders of true wealth. You can get the accelerated version of these principles in Ed Young’s book The Zone.

This is a book I use for reference often. It’s in my top 3 money books of all time. Check it out and you will learn that “The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it” Proverbs 10:22

What steps have you taken in the past to cure your money problems?
